Mirinda Carfrae, or Rinny, is the leader of the early season poll for the women to be on top of the podium at the World Championships in October. Carfrae was on top in 2010 and was second in 2009 and 2011 and she also was the World Champion at the 70.3 distance in 2007 prior to switching to Ironman in 2009.
Brits Leanda Cave and Rachel Joyce received votes, as did Caroline Steffen. The early season is a good indicator of things to come, but with the new KPR points system it’s hard to know the exact strategies because peaking in October is the goal. All the women picked in the voting are contenders to be on top and it will be interesting to see the season unfold to see if their will be others in the mix.
Carfrae holds 2 of the fastest run records in Kona and is the current record holder for the women at 2:52:09. She is one of the best Ironman runners in the sport. The video below is an interview of her run strategies.
